De-Clutter Your Life

What a cathartic January it has been! We are decorating our house at the moment and as the painters arrive in each room, we have started the process of de-cluttering. Once we were forced to do it, it has been the most unexpected, liberating experience.

So much unnecessary stuff we all keep – the overflowing wardrobes, the piles of papers and bills, the old photos in boxes - and the thought of it all is very energy draining. But the opposite is also true and is much more positive – letting go of some of our stuff is energy giving! Apart from creating more physical space, de-cluttering our surroundings also creates more thinking space, as if it is helping to release some bonds that have been holding us back and draining our energy.

But what about our other mental “stuff” – what about having a having a clutter-free mind, as well as clutter-free surroundings so we can focus on what is important?

  • Make a mental inventory of everything that is annoying you or draining your energy – no matter how small.
  • Use cues such as “I worry most about…..”.  “If I could change one thing in my life, it would be….”. “I am overwhelmed by…..”.
  • Work your way through the list, starting with the easy things – and that may not be a physical action, rather a commitment to dump the worry.
  • Learn to say no more often.
  • Go to bed in a relaxed state, leaving any remaining mental clutter outside the bedroom.

The secret to de-cluttering your brain is to figure out what you can and can’t change. Maybe the only thing you can change about certain situations is your attitude or perspective. For all the worrying we do as parents, our children can still get hurt even if we’re travelling with them! Our bad tempered colleague can choose to continue the anger, while we choose to ignore it or become amused, rather than frustrated.

A clutter free mind is the ultimate letting go. It’s an essential part of self-care that we rarely do anything about. So, say goodbye to the worry, the frustration, the anger, and anything else that’s cluttering your mind’s wardrobe.
